▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Natsume Sakasaki
CANON: Ensemble Stars!
CANON POINT: After Wondergame
AGE: 17
BACKGROUND: Natsume is the son of a prominent fortune teller and has been interested in following in his mother’s footsteps since he was young. It is implied that his family follows traditional beliefs in magic and superstition, as when he was a child he was often dressed as a girl following the ritual of having sickly boys crossdress in the hopes of ensuring safety from evil spirits. At some point during this time Natsume attended an idol training school run by Tsumugi Aoba’s family as repayment for his mother helping Tsumugi’s when they got involved in a cult.
Natsume’s father is the one who insisted that he enroll in Yumenosaki Academy, wanting him to become someone who could manipulate society by working as a charismatic fusion of idol and fortune teller. Despite being skeptical about such a thing even being possible he agrees to attend, soon becoming grouped in with the students known as the "Five Oddballs" because of his mysterious and eccentric behavior. He gains a reputation in the school for offering fortune telling advice to other students and it is revealed that when his mother is away he occasionally takes her place on TV.
While Eichi Tenshouin is successful in defeating the rest of the Oddballs and more or less ruining their reputations, it seems that as a first year Natsume was protected by his seniors to a degree, reporting that he escaped with "only minor injuries". This still naturally brewed resentment in him towards the student council president for the way he manipulated the school and hurt his friends, and he vowed to work to defeat Eichi in the same way he defeated and disgraced the Oddballs. Since then he created the unit Switch with Tsumugi- by now a former member of fine- and another underclassman, beginning to focus more seriously on pursuing the life of an idol.
PERSONALITY: Well-suited to his place in the Five Oddballs, Natsume is eccentric and infamously difficult to understand. Sharp-tongued and little perverse, he tends to analyze people and call out their faults or personality quirks to an extent that comes off as disquieting and intrusive. He claims that this is an "occupational habit" he has picked up from working as a fortune teller since being able to read people is an important part of the job, and that his tendency to be harsh comes from his mother’s advice to "aim and kill one’s vital point from the very first meeting". Thanks to this skill Natsume is very good at planning and manipulating others, often purposefully twisting his words to see them react in a certain way. Of course it is obviously a trait that can isolate him when he calls someone out on something painful that they don’t want acknowledged.
Constantly referring to himself as a liar he often hides his true intentions or steps around topics he dislikes with complicated metaphors, threats, or those aforementioned assessments of others. In particular he places specific importance in the meaning of the spoken word, believing that language and the intent behind what one says can act as powerful magic to influence others.
Independent to almost a fault, Natsume hates being tied down to people or schedules and rarely ever attends class unless he has a specific reason to, although this shouldn’t be mistaken for him being lazy. In reality he is very clever and ambitious, quick to plan and gather information to gain every possible advantage in situations. He has gone so far as to plant bugs and hidden cameras in several places in the school along with secret passageways, using them to move about without detection and collect data on classmates and staff alike. Despite his disdain for Eichi the two of them have been compared several times as they can be similarly ruthlessness and manipulative in order to achieve their goals. Quick to anger and prone to pettiness Natsume can be a force to reckon with if one gets on his bad side or is in the way and he has been shown to be more than willing to use everything at his disposal to get what he wants, including blackmailing school faculty.
Beneath his brusque outer layer Natsume generally means well and isn’t as threatening as he makes himself out to be. He believes that it is essential for one to establish themselves as unique in the world and act as the protagonist of their own life, although he himself is still searching for the exact place he fits in. While he hides it well he is often plagued by doubts of his own future and feelings of inadequacy when compared to the other Oddballs, believing that he doesn’t have the right to be on the same level as them. Due to being treated as a genius for most of his life he grew complacent, not seeking to do anything because he was certain that it was only natural for good things to come to him because of his upbringing. But after watching his friends suffer he felt an urge to do something for the first time, wanting to feel worthy of being associated with them and seeking some sort of retribution. In the end he turns from his desire for revenge, understanding that doing such a thing would only delay the inevitable and ultimately only cause more suffering. He still wrestles with this uncertainty and feeling of inadequacy regularly though and the feeling of helplessness makes him more prone to lash out, particularly at Tsumugi.
Even though Natsume claims to be a liar it’s more accurate to say that his roundabout manner of speaking conceals the fact that he’s actually pretty honest, even if he veils his true feelings with fancy meaningful words. He is straightforward about his own shortcomings, noting that he is still immature and has a lot to learn, something he became more acutely aware of after the defeats of his upperclassmen. There is a gentler side to him as well, seen in his treatment towards the first year Sora and the others in the Oddballs, all of whom he displays much more open affection and respect for. While he is very open with his attentiveness for Sora especially he tends to go more out of his way to conceal his feelings otherwise, but beneath his insults and occasional punches he likes many more people than he's willing to admit.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Natsume is very adept with technology and chemicals, often working with both in his free time and showing a knack for both that borders on dangerous. At one point he creates a chemical that shocks anyone who touches it and he is also able to set up a cell phone to destroy itself to cover his tracks. He is also a very quick learner, able to study material a year ahead of his classmates and pass without attending lessons at all.
Natsume has also been shown to be able to do very convincing vocal mimicry and throw his voice. His fortune-telling abilities are rumored to be very accurate throughout the school and it seems that he has enough prowess to also serve as an occasional replacement for his mother on television. But aside from this he's a normal high-schooler.
